Canvas are a very popular medium for painting.
To make canvas, we use woven fabrics.
Usually, the fabric is cotton or linen.
Canvas have a lot of uses;
you can even make tents or bags with it!
Painting on canvas started in the 14th century in Italy,
it was cheaper to use wood panels.
Canvas are stretched onto a wood frame.
Once the canvas is on the frame,
you apply a coat of gesso: a white paint,
to avoid damaging the fabric.
Depending on their style,
painters will prep their canvas in their own way.
